That was how scared they were of anyone finding out and disgracing their family and their priest. So they talked and talked and talked some more. That was good therapy for ALL of them. When their Father falls into a coma , Ranee calls her three daughters to come together, esp. Sonya since she doesn\’t live in the same area as the rest of the family and may not come home. All feel guilty except Trisha about not wanting to visit their father in the hospital.

They had a good relationship up until her father went in to the hospital. Then things starting happening with Trisha. And it goes downhill from there. Marin, the oldest sister, was hard to like for me. The further I progressed though the book I understood why she acted the way she did,but still could not bring myself to change my mind. When her daughter starts following in her footsteps, Marin\’s reaction is unbelievable.

Sonya was my favorite sister even though she had some really bad serious problems. Without really realizing it, she was the freest of them all in a small way. The abuse she suffered was the worse of the 3 sisters. Her career choice saved her only to an extent as the abuse overshadowed her whole life. I loved how she cheered up the children with serious health problems while they were in the hospital.

This was a well written book with a good plot. Sejal Badani did an excellent job in describing what happened to Ranee, Marin, Trisha and Sonya in India and America so the prose flowed easily. For the most part the story is told from some of the characters POV and other parts by a third person narrator.

There are a few surprises that I did not see coming and I liked the ending of the book. This is an emotional story and may not be for everyone, but it is a good story and can open your eyes to how domestic violence affects people.

Badani tackles the difficult subject of abuse with sensitivity and aplomb. All four have been moulded by brutal patriarch Brent, who is bitter at having sacrificed his own life in India to secure a better one for his family.

Badani delves deeply into the hearts and souls of her characters, creating people you sympathise with and care about. She somehow even makes you feel compassion for Brent, the creator of this broken family.

The narrative is at times poignant and absorbing, at others explosive and shocking, carrying the reader on a wave of emotion as you accompany the women on their journey from guilt, blame and retribution to truth, self-acceptance, forgiveness and healing. The final twist is cleverly concealed and a perfect ending to the book. Just a small point of criticism. This happened too often and spoilt my enjoyment of an otherwise great book. Two of the women get to deliver their tales in the first person, and the other two in the third. But somehow Tricia has blocked out something that has made her terrified to have children of her own. Their mother Ranee is the longest suffering but has managed to look away from having all three of her daughters badly damaged by her husband. Too much was hinted at but not delivered. Are we supposed to try to understand him or sympathise with him? The three girls also have non-Indian names despite two of them being born in India before the family relocated and the family being Hindus.

I read a lot of books about immigrant experience but felt this one could as easily have completely ignored where the family came from and their immigrant experience and made the whole family natives of just about anywhere.

If you want an outstanding book about an abusive family that will stay with you long after you\’ve finished reading, I\’d like to recommend \’An Obedient Father\’ by Akhil Sharma. A heart-rending but ultimately uplifting book about one family\’s struggle to come to terms with the years of abuse they suffered at the hands of the patriarch. This music represents a newly found freedom for Ranee, who used to never be allowed music in the house because Brent didn\’t like it.

Now that Brent is in a coma, Ranee can choose the music she likes, allowing her not only the freedom to enjoy her home, but also the ability to discover her own tastes, likes, and interests. For the first time in her life, Ranee is free to do so without the fear of repercussions. When Brent first meets Ranee, he gives her a rock and tells her that this is symbolic for his desire to give her the world. This rock represents a small piece of that world. What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you? Seemed like a Harlequin romance. He said to me, \”I miss you\”. I replied, \”But I\’m not yours to miss\”. So annoying! What could Sejal Badani have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you? It was too long with many unlikable characters. What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike? I liked her voice. Her accent fit the story perfectly. What reaction did this book spark in you?

Anger, sadness, disappointment? Annoyance at the cliche relationships and the repetitiveness of phrases.

I found the actions of many characters to be quite unbelievable. Any additional comments? I cannot recommend this book to anyone other than those who love a cheesy romance. Stay with this story; it is worth it! The story starts of a bit slow, but rewards its readers with a compelling, complex story that I will be thinking about for a long while.

Powerful book. Not for readers under 17; needs a mature mind to grasp all the nuances of abuse and its far reaching effects. Wonderful book, often kept me awake til wee hours off the morning while listening. While it took two \”starts\” for me to get into this book, it has been a profoundly moving story of how evils within a family can affect everyone, even those in the next generation. The narration is understated, but as it became more familiar, seemed perfect for the topic, setting and issues the story tackles.

Families sometimes harbor dark secrets and when they do, they become as if they are infected with a fatal disease. Once those secrets begin to see light, there may be much pain, but healing, understanding and a hopeful future can emerge. This is a truly good story. Not every family will experience the same ending as the one within this story, but if not, understanding how important it is to eliminate the hold secrets may be enough. Story got too wordy.
